HARA Applications and Creation of Functional Safety Concept

The cornerstone of functional safety is the systematic analysis of potential hazards to which systems may be exposed and the identification of appropriate countermeasures against these hazards.

This approach is carried out through the HARA (Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment) process under the ISO 26262 standard, resulting in a customized Functional Safety Concept for the product to be developed.

Optival treats the HARA process not only as a standard analysis method, but as a strategic engineering activity that drives product safety and ensures the production of project-based, traceable and ASIL-compliant outputs.

HARA (Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment) Process

Within the scope of the HARA process carried out in accordance with ISO 26262:

  • Functions and objectives are identified,
  • Functional hazards and possible failure scenarios are analyzed,
  • For each hazard, severity, exposure and controllability values are evaluated and the ASIL level is assigned,
  • The results are translated into safety goals, which are the key input to the system development process.

This analysis is not only at the system level, but can be further broken down into subsystems, components and even hardware/software.

Development of a Functional Safety Concept

The safety targets created in line with the HARA outputs guide the architectural design of the product to be developed. In this context:

  • Technical protection measures and system behavior scenarios are determined for each security target,
  • The safety concept describes the safe response of the system for both nominal and fault conditions,
  • The concept is integrated with system engineering and then taken as a basis for translation into technical requirements.

The Functional Safety Concept is the basis for the technical safety requirements and test plans to be established in the later phases of the system. Functional safety means that the system not only “works” but also “fails safely”. With this understanding, Optival supports you to put your products on a safe basis at HARA and safety concept level
